I managed to shave our three-hour drive down to a two and half hours. I don't get the opportunity to drive too often so when I do I make it count. Abby's parents lived in a town called Saugerties which was straight shot up the Thruway. It was the perfect roadway to open up my newest Aston Martin.

My little Rip Van Winkle spent the majority of the drive sleeping off the remainder of her afternoon martinis behind a pair of giant sunglasses, leaving me alone to process the myriad of thoughts that were running through my head.

You’re so cruel. Hearing my mother's words to my father come from the lips of the woman I cherished had shaken me, even though she wasn't serious. It made me even more firm in my resolve to never become my father. Catherine deserved better, Abby deserved better, and my mother deserved better.

Abby stirred as we approached the Saugerties/ Woodstock exit. She took a sip of water from her bottle, removed her sunglasses and rolled the window down letting the sun and wind hit her face.

“Hey, you,” I called to her. She turned to me, placed her tiny hand on top of the hand that was gripping the gear shift and smiled.

“Are you ready to experience the splendor of the town of Saugerties, New York?” She grinned at me.

"I'm ready," I said as I downshifted and exited the Thruway.

"Okay!” she took a deep breath and pointed. "Here we go: This is Main Street. There is the best place to get chocolate in the world. This is about a dozen antique shops. That's the grocery store. That's the diner where I worked in high school, and that concludes the tour." She was still grinning, and I was sure this was another one of her jokes but when I looked around the town had disappeared, and we were on an open stretch of road surrounded by fields.

"Holy shit," I said.

“I know, right?!” she laughed. “It’s so tiny. Technically, it’s pretty big, but this is the bustling town portion. The rest is mostly houses and farmland. It’s coming up on the left.” She pointed through the windshield.

I saw a fence with a large sign that read The Weeping Lily Estate.

"The Weeping Lily?" I asked. She sighed, and her face flushed slightly.

“He named it after my mom.” She was looking out the window as we slowly rolled up the long driveway to the house.

“But your mother’s name isn’t Lily.” She gave me a pointed look and realization dawned on me. “Oh,” I said.

“My family is a little,” she searched for the words and finally settled on, “unconventional, but they’re awesome.”

“I don’t doubt it.” I grabbed her hand and brought it to my lips.
